AirSafe is a Houston-based project that provides both live and historical readings of the Methane concentration in the atmosphere.
Live Data
The top half of the display shows your distance to the nearest gas sensor, along with a description telling which sensor it is and where it is located. Along with this, the live reading from that sensor is displayed, which is updated about once per second. AirSafe then tells you whether that reading is something to be concerned about.
Sensor Map
A map shows all of the sensor locations as red pins. At this stage in the project, there is only one red pin because there is only one sensor so far.
Historical Data
A graph of a sensor's past observations can be pulled up by tapping on the corresponding red pin in the sensor map. The graph shows the methane concentration levels recorded over the past 6 hours.
Notifications
If a dangerous level of Methane is detected while the app is in background mode, the user receives a notification as warning. (Note that such a reading is highly unlikely to occur in the case of Methane.)
About the Project
The AirSafe app is part of the community-facing end of a collaborative project between Rice University and Technology For All. The project hopes to provide useful, high granularity data about the gases in the atmosphere to both researchers and members of the community.
Note that the project focuses on the Houston area.
